Some patients are better candidates for a panniculectomy than a tummy tuck.
Panniculectomy is a plastic surgery procedure which can benefit people who have had massive weight loss. This might be the result of diet and exercise, or because of successful bariatric weight-loss surgery. The procedure also can help people who suffer from an overly large and hanging mid-section.
In an obese person, there can be a large "apron" (abdominal panniculus or pannus) of excess fat and skin that hangs down from the lower abdomen. This apron of hanging skin can remain after massive weight loss. At times, this apron is so large that it covers the hips and extends around to the lower back. The pannus frequently contributes to a number of health concerns, including chronic wounds and back pain. Panniculectomy is a surgical procedure in which this apron is removed.
