When you awake from your procedure, you will find that you are wearing an abdominal binder or girdle. This is to be worn at all times, except during showering, and laundered frequently to keep clean.

It is natural to have some red oozing onto the dressing (that's why we put it on!).

You will have drains following surgery. Empty these three times per day and keep a written record of the amount emptied. After emptying them, compress the plastic "grenades" at the end of the tubes (our nurse will demonstrate). You may leak some fluid around (rather than strictly through) the tubes. This is not a problem. Always keep the tubes from the drains outside of the binder.

Do not take any aspirin or aspirin-containing medicines for two weeks after surgery. If you have any pain, take Tylenol or the prescription medicine you were given after the surgery. You may resume all of your other medicines on the day after surgery. If you have any questions, please call the office.

You must not stay strictly in bed at any point following your procedure. Even on the day you had surgery, you should take a few steps (carefully and with assistance) every few hours, and increase your movement each day.

Planning your Procedure and RecoveryYou may shower 72 hours following your surgery.

For the first week following the procedure, you should do only light physical activities such as walking to the kitchen or dining room to eat, to the bathroom, or elsewhere that is not strenuous. You should not drive during this period.

For the next week, you should do limited regular activities such as going to the grocery store or doing other non-strenuous activities. Do not lift anything heavier than a phone book.

You can resume light exercise such as walking two weeks after surgery, and can usually resume sexual activities at this time.

After one month, you usually can resume all activities except for heavy lifting.

After surgery, please immediately call the office for any signs of shortness of breath, fevers, undue pain, leg pain, or lightheadedness.
